Andrew Tan was born in the Fujian Province of China to a father who worked in a transistor radio factory and a mother who was a homemaker. They later on moved to Hong Kong where they lived in an apartment before settling in Manila.
He pursued a business degree in the University of the East and supported himself as a math tutor of several graduate school students. He later worked part time as an import assistant in the international division of a company owned by Leonardo Ty until the time he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in 1974.
The young Andrew began his career in business by opening a company that imported household appliances and selling them to appliance centers. He then ventured into real estate and started a residential condominium project in Greenhills, San Juan. Megaworld Corporation was incorporated in 1989 and has since become one of the country’s leading property development firms.
In addition to Megaworld, Tan’s holding company Alliance Global is also involved in food and beverage (Emperador Distillers, E&J Gallo Wines), glass manufacturing (Anglo Watson’s Glass Inc.), tourism and gaming (Travellers International Hotel Group, a partnership with Genting Malaysia Berhad Group, which operates Resorts World Manila) and Golden Arches Development Corp. (the local franchise operator of McDonald’s).
